Music We’re Loving Right Now – Little Less Shy – Holander

I’ve had ‘Little Less Shy‘ stuck in my head for several hours now, and I’m not mad. This brand new single by Los Angeles pop/electropop artist Holander is the first single from the upcoming EP ‘Turn Down Your Mind, Open Your Eyes’.

Holander hails from sunny Los Angeles, where she has been producing her own brand of upbeat, cheery electropop reminiscent of Hailee Steinfeld, and The 1975. This upcoming EP with a title like ‘Turn Down Your Mind, Open Your Eyes’ might of had us anticipating a sound suffused with angst, but the reality turns out to be very much far and away from darkness.

Our thoughts

This is clever pop; full of good tunes and danceable beats. Truth-be-told it is, on the whole a substantially happy affair. Numbers such as ‘Satellite’ with its lovely harmony and of course the carefree ‘Game Face’ with its bubbling synth, bring light and variety to the mix. The rest of this EP manages to be versatile and cohesive at the same time, with a collection of beautiful pop melodies. With Holander’s brilliant atmospheric voice, the catchy beats make the collection all the more worth getting.

All-in all I found the EP to be a thoroughly captivating affair, and I believe she will succeed on a huge scale in the music business. This really is exceptionally good, and stands out from the bland pop that appears to be the norm these days. Clearly one of the refreshing ‘wow’ albums that come along every now and then. It’s clear that Holander makes music designed to empower listeners and allow them to better understand themselves. Her background on screen and in the music industry show her flexibility and drive to succeed and create something unique and long-lasting.

Early life

Coming from a musical home where her parents were constantly playing guitar and singing in the living room, she knew from a young age that music would always be part of her life. Her first experience with songwriting occurred in elementary school, when she and her sister said “let’s go to our rooms and not come out until we write a song.” Although she grew up on a steady diet of classics from artists such as The Who, Bruce Springsteen, and The Velvet Underground, her music has been influenced by contemporary artists as well. Her background in children’s musical theatre has clearly shaped the way she uses her songs to tell stories.

This EP provides the perfect marriage between melodies and arrangements that will make you sit up and listen. Indeed, it is the catchiness that will perhaps leave a lasting impression, but I’ll let you decide for yourself. If you enjoy the tracks and EP as much as I do, you can keep up to date with their latest offerings by following her on Twitter, Facebook, Sound Cloud and Instagram.
