In its simplest form, Ho’oponopono is a mantra where you repeat the words ‘I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you’ as a form of mental and spiritual cleaning that could be compared to Buddhist techniques for clearing karma. It has been defined as a forgiveness and reconciliation practice and a cleansing of ‘errors of thought’.
The first step asks you to say sorry for everything that has happened or any wrong thing that you have witnessed.
It makes it easy for you to move ahead in your life. Once you know that you have the courage to say sorry for anything wrong, you will feel better.
Once you can say sorry, the second step requires you to ask for forgiveness.
You will seek forgiveness for everything you felt sorry for in the first step. While doing so, you are asking to forgive everything from you and your memories that may have been involved in the wrongdoing. These may sound weird to many of us, but the process is magical once you mean what you say.
The third step is showing your gratitude for everything you are thankful for.
This way, you will learn to appreciate everything, big or small, that you have drawn into your life. You might get an unexpected response for this. Thank you, but you need not worry about the result or response. At the right time, the correct result will appear in front of you. This step will help you to have patience as well.
The last step is to show your love and say I love you to everything that is yours.
This way, you will learn to love everything related to you.
Please forgive me
I love you
Using Ho’oponopono, you will never feel pressured to hide unpleasant memories or thoughts. You will learn to come forward and express what you want to leave your life. This way, you will be living a stress-free life with no regrets. There are several cases where this has been used with significant effect to help people.
There is a legendary story of a man known as Dr Hew Len, who cured every patient in the criminally insane ward of a Hawaii State Hospital — without ever seeing a single patient!
Dr Len set up an office within the hospital to review his patients’ files. While he looked at these files, he would work on himself and repeat the mantra, all while continuing to look at the files and having no contact with the patients. Over four years, the patients all healed. In addition, the staff who had been calling in sick or considering quitting their jobs eventually loved coming to work.
He used the legendary Hawaiian healing and cleansing method Ho’oponopono to accomplish all of this. It is based on healing through loving oneself. Dr Len repeated the words “I love you” and “I am sorry” repeatedly while reviewing each file individually. After a few months, the restrained patients were allowed to walk freely, patients were taken off medications, and even the hopeless cases were eventually released back into society. Isn’t that incredible?
