Review & Giveaway: When Does Autumn Start? John Lewis Giveaway

It’s almost Autumn and with the sudden change in the weather it pays to be prepared. Officially Autumn doesn’t begin until 23rd September, but you can almost guarantee it’ll be sweater weather before then.  But officially when does Autumn start? There are two ways of determining when autumn starts. It depends on whether you are referring to the astronomical or meteorological seasons. The astronomical dates of autumn are based on the Earth’s changing position in accordance to the sun. It is determined based on the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth during its rotational axis. This way of classifying seasons takes into account equinoxes and solstices. An equinox is when the length of the day and night are equal. Solstices are midway between these, when the sun is at its highest and lowest in the sky at mid-day.

In contrast, the meteorological calendar simply splits the calendar into four seasons, made up of three months each.

This method, commonly used by the Met Office, means autumn is defined as the months September, October, November. The other seasons are defined as Spring (March, April and May), Summer (June, July and August) and Winter (December, January and February). As a result, this means, according to the meteorological season, autumn starts on September 1 and ends on November 30. Which is how I commonly tend to think of it.

For those who follow the astronomical calendar, there are a few more weeks until autumn starts.

While, For the northern hemisphere, autumn starts on September 23, the same day as the Autumnal Equinox. Summer ends on September 22, and autumn takes over. While, On this date, night and day are nearly the same length at all latitudes. From then, as the calendar moved towards winter, the days will get shorter and the nights will get longer.
