A £3.33 bottle of Prosecco has been revealed in a deal that fans of the sparkling wine have labelled the bargain of the century. For two days only (Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 August) Lidl is selling six-bottle cases of Prosecco for £20 each. Forget the inevitable August bank holiday washout, this deal is perfect for stocking up for Christmas!
Best be quick, on Monday the wine returns to the normal retail price of £5.79. With six bottles costing £31.20 – and remember the deal doesn’t start until Saturday morning.
The wine from the Veneto region of Italy, is seen as a cheap alternative to Champagne. And has soared in popularity in recent years, with consumption doubling in the UK between 2013 and 2014.
Britons are the world’s biggest consumers of Prosecco
With around a third of all bottles produced last year being drunk in the UK. Prosecco Watch, a Facebook page which tracks deals, alerted followers to Lidl’s offer. Fans joked that they would camp out to make sure they don’t miss out on it. Whilst others revealed their plans to stock up on the tipple in time for Christmas. The deal also caused a stir on Twitter, where one mother joked it was the new school holidays survival kit.
Last year, the Allini Prosecco – which is made using Glera grapes – was named the best bargain prosecco in Good Housekeeping’s December issue. The reviewer described the drink as “a little drier than some Proseccos”, as well as “light, refreshing and easy to drink” with a floral aroma of pear. The Prosecco has a rating of 85 out of 100 in Lidl’s own customer rating system, putting it in the ‘very good’ category, and has been described as “Very versatile, either on its own or with food. This has the clean, pear drop aromas characteristic of good Prosecco and is light, crisp and fresh on the palate. A little drier than some Proseccos and very moreish.” on Lidl’s website
