A Fresh Look: How the Pandemic Has Led to a Rise in Men Seeking Cosmetic Procedures

After spending over a year in and out of Zoom calls, many men seek cosmetic procedures to make them appear “Zoom-ready”. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reported a staggering 70% rise in the total requests for video consultations throughout 2020.

A small percentage of men reported that they feel their looks have aged five years due to the stress triggered by the lockdown. Since they spend most days on a work video call, they have noticed small details about themselves from the shoulders up, ones that have previously gone unnoticed—for instance, dark circles under their eyes, even the colour or straightness of their teeth.

With various options available to alter their appearance, many men are considering or have enquired about undergoing specific treatments. These are just a few treatments men think to be “Zoom-ready”.

Wanting The Perfect Smile

Before the pandemic, the British Orthodontic Society (BOC) had noted an increase in the number of adults in the UK seeking orthodontic treatment. 75% of orthodontists reported an increase in private patients, and 60% attributed this growth to the heightened awareness of adult orthodontists.

The reasons why people are motivated to achieve the perfect smile vary. For some, it is due to seeing gleaming, pearly smiles across their social media platforms and television screens. Others are that getting professional treatment for your teeth is becoming increasingly more socially acceptable.

Due to the pandemic, for others, the daily video calls for work took their toll on them. They notice that their teeth might not be as perfect as their colleague’s and so have considered getting dental work, such as braces to straighten teeth or have them professionally whitened.

Desire To Have A Head Of Hair

The past year has undoubtedly been a stressful time for many. However, one of the effects of long-term stress is hair loss. Most men experience hair loss at some point in their line, whether a thinning crown or a receding hairline, which can significantly impact their overall self-esteem and confidence.

Although restrictions are beginning to ease, work video calls are still occurring, so men still have those moments noticing things they consider flaws in their appearance. As such, a few are contemplating undergoing a hair transplant. Follicular Unit Extraction, commonly known as FUE, is one of the most modern hair transplant techniques. With more celebrities openly admitting to having FUE treatment, FUE clinics have noted that the taboo around having a hair transplant is fading.

Having an FUE treatment is a minimally invasive hair restoration option that requires skill and precision to achieve the desired results. However, the procedure’s outcome is noticeable not only visually by the patient or others but also by the increase in confidence and self-esteem the person has afterwards.

Ways To Look Younger

Over the years, Botox has become an increasingly standard procedure. With both men and women admitting to having undergone the treatment. During this past year, it has been a treatment considered by men after noticing wrinkles and fine lines whilst on video calls.

The quick treatment temporarily freezes facial muscles to ensure any movement is minimised. It softens current wrinkles and fine lines and prevents new ones from forming.
